We don’t know. But it’s not writing, the glyphs are musical notes,” explained the Wraith. She passed her ghostly hand over several glyphs in a specific sequence. A deep tone issued from each one, producing a musical code. The pillar split in two and the upper half rose into the vaulted ceiling. A large Luminaria, black as obsidian, rested in a shallow depression in the pillar’s lower half.
“This is the Akasha
Stone,” Amakeeri explained. “It’s the only
repository of our
complete Hybrid history, past, present, and future.”
“Future
history? Isn’t that an oxymoron?”
“I could say it’s a
non-temporal holographic nexus of parallel
probabilities, but
‘future history’ rolls off the tongue more easily,” the
Wraith
said with a smile. She reached toward the Akasha sphere and slid
her
phantom hand inside the jet-black stone. After a moment, she pulled
her
hand back.
“I programmed the Akasha to show you the whole
story in simplified
images. Otherwise, you’d be here for days,”
said the Wraith. “Place your
palm on the stone and open your
mind.”
Willa sensed no subterfuge. She reached out, gently laid
her palm on the
stone’s smooth, cool surface and relaxed. The
Akasha glowed a deep blue,
and an azure energy bubble expanded to
contain Willa. Within seconds, she
fell into an open-eyed-trance
as the Akasha unspooled pictures in her mind,
accompanied by
Amakeeri’s voice.
“As you already know,” began the Wraith,
“an extraterrestrial race
called the Anu arrived on Earth more
than three hundred thousand years
ago.”
Willa saw the Anu’s
giant saucer-ships land in the African veldt.
Primitive
proto-humans cowered among the trees and rock outcrops as they
peered
at dozens of nine-foot-tall, blue-skinned humanoids who
disembarked
from the gleaming discs.
Another series of images unfolded in
Willa’s mind as Amakeeri
described the scene. “The Anu came to
Earth to mine minerals that would
help them correct an imbalance
in their planet’s climate, but the task was
too great for the
small band of aliens. As master geneticists, their solution
was to
engineer an army of workers by splicing their genes into the
hominids
that evolved on Earth to create homo sapiens. Those humans
became
Hybrid Zero. Once they had what they needed, the Anu returned
to
their home- world and left humans to their own devices.”
The
scene shifted to a future vision of Earth that was
technologically
advanced, but environmentally on the verge of
collapse. Polluted air,
deforested landscapes, and dead oceans
surrounded decaying cities.
“Over time, Earth humans created
many technological marvels. Driven
by their greed for wealth and
power, they became blind to the damage they
were causing the
planet. The climate shifted, the ecosystems on land and in
the
oceans collapsed, and Earth became uninhabitable.”
Willa watched
as humans began to mutate into small beings with large
eyes and
leathery, grey skin.
“Humans went underground and, over time,
were forced to genetically
mutate themselves to survive the harsh
environment. They lost the ability to
procreate. They tried
cloning and other experiments, but no matter what
they did, they
knew they were a dying race.”
Like an army of ants, the
diminutive beings began to manufacture
saucer-like spaceships and
a large, ring-like portal in one of their enormous
underground
bases. The portal flared to life and formed a tunnel of energy.
Their
ships entered the tunnel.
“In a last, desperate attempt to
preserve their race, the mutated humans
used their advanced
technology to go back to a time before the destruction.”
Willa
was riveted as scenes of “alien abductions” took place before
her
eyes.
“The ‘Greys’ – now known as ‘Whelks’ to
all of us – began to extract
DNA from their ancestors to create
the Hybrids that would allow their
culture to continue.”
Willa
saw five different types of Hybrids born in liquid-filled
tanks
onboard spaceships. They ranged in phases from the withered
Greys to
those that appeared almost human, like Willa
herself.
“Hybrids were created in five phases, each phase
becoming more and
more human. But as their genetic program
progressed, many of the original
Anu traits also came to the
forefront, making Hybrids more than human.”
Images of the
Landing, where Hybrid ships arrived on Earth and
revealed
themselves to twenty-first-century humans, played across
Willa’s
vision. Time raced forward until Willa saw an image of
herself. For a
moment, she thought she was gazing into a mirror
until a double helix of
DNA superimposed over her body. The DNA
then transformed into a triple
helix as Amakeeri continued.
“With
the creation of Hybrids, the timeline was altered and Earth
became
the sixth Hybrid race. But because the genetic marker of the
original
Anu race has unfolded within your DNA, you, Willa, have become
the
seed of a seventh Hybrid race that we Wraith call the Anu-Het.”
Willa
watched her reflection transform into a tall, slender being
with
piercing, almond-shaped black eyes, blue-tinted skin, and
long dark hair.
“The Anu-Het will be born with the combined
abilities of all the levels
of Mastery. Your descendants will be
an entirely new Hybrid species that
will spread to the farthest
reaches of space and transform the galaxy into an
indestructible
new Alliance where peace and prosperity will reign for a
hundred
thousand years.”
The blue bubble of the Akasha field retracted
into the stone. Willa
snapped from her trance and stared at
Amakeeri, who gazed at Willa with
an almost spiritual
reverence.
“I knew you were meant for something greater than
merely becoming a
Wraith, but I had no idea until now…”
Amakeeri collected herself. “This
probable future, not yet set
in stone, is why you’re so important, Willa, and
why our plan to
repel the Archon’s attack must succeed. If we fail, the new
future
will be one of darkness instead of light.”
